Bourns Announces New High Power TVS Diodes for AC and DC Power Line Applications

RIVERSIDE, Calif., January 28, 2014 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the introduction of new high Power TVS diode models in SMD packaging for use in AC and DC power line applications. The new models feature high current bidirectional port protection meeting IEC 61000-4-5 8/20 µs current surge requirements and are RoHS* compliant. Designated Bourns® Models PTVS15-058C-SH and PTVS15-076C-SH, these Power TVS diodes offer enhanced performance stability and increased reliability. Designed using advanced silicon technology Bourns’ new devices deliver lower clamping voltage under surge compared to Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) technology. The SMD package provides a 20% reduction in peak clamping voltage compared to an equivalent through-hole device because of its lower lead inductance. The result is reduced electrical stress on the protected circuitry. Additionally, the SMD package simplifies assembly and can reduce costs by eliminating the extra design requirements in cases where the Power TVS diode is the only through-hole component on the printed circuit board.

Bourns’ new Power TVS diode models also exhibit an excellent surge response versus temperature, with a maximum surge current rating at 150 °C, which is 70% of their rated value at 25 °C. Both models provide very high surge current protection with a peak pulse current rating of 15 kA. The Bourns® Model PTVS15-058C-SH features a 58 V standoff voltage and the Bourns® model PTVS15-076C-SH has a 76 V standoff voltage.

Bourns First to Develop Simplified One-Page Documentation Series on Port Interface Circuit Protection

RIVERSIDE, Calif., June 15, 2010 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the introduction of a unique new series of useful design documentation developed to assist designers in selecting the appropriate circuit protection solution for a specific port interface. Bourns® PortNote™ Solutions are a series of one-page documents that provide concise and easily understandable information on relevant compliance standards, Bourns solutions and part numbers, the specific interface schematic and alternative solution references. As the majority of circuit protection products are designed into variations of just a few ports, each Bourns® PortNote™ Solution offers designers a simple starting point for the protection of a particular port.

“Bourns® PortNote™ Solutions are a time-saving design tool that quickly provides an effective circuit protection solution known to work in most typical applications down to the Bourns® part number,” said Dr. Erik Meijer, vice president of circuit protection at Bourns. “PortNote™ Solutions are not intended to replace detailed application notes or the customized solutions provided by our FAE teams, but rather be a useful resource to streamline the circuit protection selection process for a specific port interface.”

RIVERSIDE, Calif., August 13, 2009 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced a new series of three-electrode surface mount Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) surge protection devices ideal for broadband applications due to their ultra-low capacitance and low insertion and return loss performance. Designated the Bourns® 2054 Series, the robust devices are available in voltages from 230 to 470V and also feature RoHS* compliant versions. The Bourns® 2054 Series feature a compact size (5 x 7.2 mm) and offer superior protection characteristics suitable for a broad range of applications including telecommunications, commercial and industrial applications. 

Bourns® GDTs help prevent damage from transient disturbances by creating a short-to-ground circuit during conduction. When an electrical surge exceeds the defined breakdown voltage level of the GDT, the device becomes ionized and rapid conduction takes place. When the surge passes and the system voltage returns to normal levels, the GDT returns to its high-impedance “off” state.

They can withstand ITU-T K.20, K.21 and K.45 basic test requirements within rated limits, making them ideal for telecom ports designed for Metallic Ended Line Test (MELT) functionality such as ADSL and VDSL2 hardware or test equipment.
