RIVERSIDE, Calif., October 20, 2009 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced that the company has  expanded its line of fixed resistor products to include a new radio frequency (RF) Power Termination that is the industry’s first Stripline 50 ohm Termination to feature 1000 Watts (W) at frequencies up to 1 gigahertz (GHz).  Designated Model CHF190104KxBF500L, the new RF Power Termination is able to run at very high power due to excellent thermal impedance.  In addition, at 800 megahertz (MHz), designers can expect few reflections as the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is a maximum of 1.06.  Optimized for applications where a high power termination is required to be remotely located, the new Bourns® RF Power Termination is designed for combiners and dividers in television and radio broadcast, radar and medical equipment or other applications that require very high power.

Bourns’® Model CHF190104KxBF500L can also help decrease the number of interconnections needed in a system.  Due to its improved power range, engineers can achieve higher power in their combiners or reduce the existing number of terminations to achieve the same amount of power, which helps to decrease overall product footprint and costs.  The new device also features a 1000 W at 100 degrees Celsius case temperature.

“The new Bourns® RF Power Termination offers a powerful combination of high power and high return loss up to 1 GHz making it one of the leading Stripline Terminations on the market today,” said Cathal Sheehan, product marketing manager for the Bourns® Resistive Products Division.  “Bourns’ extensive experience with thickfilm technology has helped us create a device that offers low inductance, higher operating temperatures and up to 1000 W load for next-generation applications such as high power transmitting stations and digital terrestrial television (DTTV).”

Bourns Announces Additions to Popular Rotary Position Sensor

August 11, 2009
Bourns® Model 3382

Bourns® Model 3382 (Download Hi-Res Image)

RIVERSIDE, Calif., August 11, 2009 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced additions to the Bourns Model 3382 rotary position sensor.  Initially released in September 2008, the popular model is compact and highly reliable with up to 1,000,000 rotational cycles.  The new additions include a through-hole option (H pin style), an increased standard rotor slot offering to accommodate 4 mm (-1) and 3.5 mm (-2) diameter D-shafts and resistance values ranging from 2.5K to 100K ohms.  The additional resistance values allow for broader freedom and flexibility for component circuit designs without limiting them to 10K ohms.  The  Bourns Model 3382 is designed for a wide range of applications requiring high quality and reliability such as navigation systems, automotive power seats and mirrors, portable electronic equipment, digital cameras, industrial equipment and controls, robotic systems and home applications including mechanical compartment systems, appliances and in-wall temperature control systems.

“The additional resistance values are significant because the only value currently available in the marketplace is 10K ohms.  Instead of just one available resistance value, engineers now have six different values ranging from 2.5K ohms to 100K ohms,” said Emill Melliz, Trimpot® product line manager at Bourns.  “The new additions to the Bourns Model 3382 rotary position sensor provide greater design options and allow engineers to find the best fit for their particular application.”

With its 2.1 millimeter (mm) slim profile, Bourns Model 3382 is well-suited for applications with space constraints and is RoHS compliant*.  The rotary position sensor device is also designed for applications that require frequent adjustment where it is necessary to control a variable output such as frequency, speed, contrast, brightness intensity, or volume control.

Bourns® Model 3046 Linear Motion Potentiometer Used in the Mini Power Tool in the Hubble Telescope Repair Mission

June 2, 2009
Hubble Space Telescope, courtesy of NASA

Hubble Space Telescope, courtesy of NASA

Recently, a variety of repair functions were completed on the Hubble Telescope by NASA astronauts. Bourns is proud to have been part of this successful mission. Our Model 3046 linear motion potentiometer is used as a trigger in the Mini Power Tool. NASA mechanical engineers designed a mechanism around the potentiometer to actuate it. The housing protected the potentiometer and made a very smooth and solid-feeling trigger for control of the tool.

If any of you were watching, the second time they used the tool, it did not work. Apparently, the astronauts forgot to charge the battery. With a fresh battery, the Mini Power Tool preformed flawlessly.
