Bourns Announces Availability of Two New Evaluation Boards for RS-485-based Applications

RIVERSIDE, Calif., August 3, 2011 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the availability of two new evaluation boards for RS-485-based applications. Using Bourns® TBU® High-Speed Protectors (HSPs), GDTs, TVS diodes and MOV products, the new boards were developed as a design resource that streamlines evaluating circuit protection on RS-485 serial device ports. To meet the required industry standards on RS-485 port interfaces, the new boards provide two different evaluation approaches. The Bourns RS-485EVALBOARD1 includes two Bourns® TBU® High-Speed Protectors (HSPs), two Bourns® fast-acting GDTs and two Bourns® TVS diodes. The Bourns RS-485EVALBOARD2 uses Bourns® TBU® High-Speed Protectors (HSPs), MOVs and TVS products.

Bourns Announces its Lowest Resistance Battery Strap Resettable Fuse

RIVERSIDE, Calif., April 27, 2011 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the company’s smallest battery strap resettable fuse featuring ultra-low resistance designed to deliver reliable and robust circuit protection.  Designated the Bourns® Multifuse® MF-LL Series, the new battery strap resettable fuse was developed in response to  portable electronics industry demand for a miniature-sized, resettable overcurrent protection with the lowest possible resistance.  The new fuse meets the circuit protection requirements of rechargeable battery packs used in portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, MP3 players and digital cameras.

“Using its lowest resistance PTC formulation to date, Bourns has produced a resettable fuse from a chip of less than 11 mm2.  Resettable fuses of such small size generally have quite high resistance values, but Bourns’ new MF-LL Series overcomes this limitation and offers an initial resistance of just 5 to 15 mOhms,” said Brian Ahearne, Multifuse® product line manager at Bourns, Inc.  “As the electronics industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace, the launch of the new MF-LL Series demonstrates Bourns’ ongoing commitment to next-generation resettable fuse development.”

The Bourns® MF-LL1190 Model is available now.  Future models in the series are in development and are scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2011.  The MF-LL Series is also RoHS* compliant.  As a pricing example, Bourns® MF-LL190 is priced at $0.25 each in 10K piece quantities.

Bourns Announces Industry’s First ECL Triggered

– Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced its latest series of Transient Blocking Unit (TBU™) circuit protection devices designed to protect telecommunications applications from surges in the industry’s first electronic current limiter triggered by excessive voltage or current. Designated the Bourns® TBU™ PL-Series SLIC, the new circuit protection device family provides extremely fast overcurrent protection combined with SLIC battery voltage tracking triggered protection. Combined with additional overvoltage protectors, this new solution protects against very high surge levels and meets telecom 500A Telcordia GR-1089 intrabuilding and 6kV/150A ITU-T standards. 

Protecting sensitive telecom applications from the potentially damaging effects of surges that can cause current and voltage to rise above normal operating levels, the Bourns® TBU™ PL-Series responds in 100 nanoseconds.  The resettable circuit protection devices also feature significantly lower let-thru energy and overshoot protection, which reduces stress on the SLIC and the printed circuit board (PCB) for increased reliability and product life.  Bourns’ new TBU™ series also cuts the circuit protection component count to three devices compared to the seven needed in a conventional gated thyristor solution because there is no need for peripheral R-C or L-C components nor additional GDTs for increased surge requirements that take up valuable PCB space and increase manufacturing costs.

“Similarly, for customers who are currently using the Bourns® P-G TBU™ series, the new Bourns® TBU™ PL-Series drastically reduces the component count and the TBU™ package size is 25 percent smaller to better meet our customer’s needs for board area and height reductions,” said Paul Wiener, telecom market director at Bourns.  “This new TBU™ series provides the best of both worlds – the highest protection levels with the fewest number of components.”

The Bourns® TBU™ PL-Series is available in three voltages (850, 600 and 500) and two operating current levels (100 mA and 200 mA) that match worldwide standards and SLIC chipset requirements.  Product samples, evaluation boards and sample kits are available now through Bourns’ distribution partners.  As a pricing example, Bourns® TBU-PL050-100-WH is priced at ($.056 each) in (3K) quantities.

About Bourns® TBU™ Technology
Bourns’ TBU™ High Speed Protector is the first new approach to electronics circuit protection in over a decade. This technology is designed to block a transient through a current disconnecting mechanism. Rather than a complex interstage coordination between two shunting components, the TBU™ device allows customers to protect circuit boards from both overvoltage and overcurrent surges. The TBU™ device protects electronic equipment within nanoseconds, essentially eliminating latency common in the circuit protection design, limiting let-through energy. The TBU™ device has virtually no capacitance or inductance, and therefore can be used in high bandwidth applications. It has a resistive characteristic which permits currents up to a certain level to pass unimpeded to the protected interface. In higher current situations, the TBU™ device switches to a high impedance state, protecting until the surge voltage dissipates or the short-circuit reseals. The TBU™ device offers full bi-directional operation which is inherently resettable.

As the majority of circuit protection products are designed into variations of just a few ports, each Bourns® PortNote™ Solution offers designers a simple starting point for the protection of a particular port.

This new Multifuse® device contains twin 250V polymer PTC resettable fuses and decreases the circuit protection footprint by fifty percent on the circuit board. Designated the Bourns® Model MF-SD013/250-2, the device provides both tip and ring overcurrent protection and aids compliance with ITU-T K.20, K21 and K.45 industry standards as well as Telcordia GR-1089 intra building. Bourns Announces Circuit Protection Solution for Generator Low-Voltage Control Interfaces

RIVERSIDE, Calif., March 3, 2010 — Bourns, Inc. today announced the company has a circuit protection solution for low-voltage control lines on generator interfaces.  This advanced solution is presented in a new application note from Bourns that details how the company’s circuit protection devices provide a fast response time to protect exposed low-voltage generator terminals of the generator.  This universal circuit protection solution is also important in delivering adequate circuit protection, regardless of installer experience, to guard against miswiring issues that can result in costly, dead on arrival (DOA) equipment failure.  The new application note includes installation information for both line voltage (120 VAC split phase, 240 V) and low voltage signals (less than 50 V) that require a resettable overcurrent/overvoltage solution capable of handling line voltage and ESD/EFT/current surge protection to safeguard sensitive circuits.

The application note shows how a Bourns® TBU™ device combined with a multilayer oxide varistor (MOV) and zener diode provides power cross and overcurrent protection.  It also describes the use of a zener diode for low voltage clamping to protect sensitive circuits and to create an avalanche current, which triggers the TBU device.  Furthermore, the MOV protects the TBU device from excessive common mode voltages when exposed to ESD and EFT surge threats.

Bourns® TBU devices protect low-voltage generators from the following threats:

  • Power cross events that typically occur during installation from miswiring
  • Pre and post-installation ESD threats from handling EFT and  inductive load (relay) switching
  • Post-installation current surges from load switching transients

Bourns Acquires Central Office Surge Protection Products Assets from Corning Cable Systems LLC

RIVERSIDE, Calif., June 19, 2009 — Bourns, Inc. today announces that the company has purchased substantially all of the assets of the central office surge protection products business from Corning Cable Systems LLC, part of Corning Incorporated’s Telecommunications segment. This asset purchase extends Bourns’ current offering of protection products and protection technology and further strengthens Bourns’ position as a leading supplier for central office and remote access cabinet surge protection.  Bourns will consolidate the central office surge protection products operation within its existing design and marketing operation in Riverside, California and manufacturing facilities in Costa Rica and Tijuana, Mexico.

Corning Cable Systems’ central office surge protection products, which include 5-pin, 4-pin, 1-pin protector modules, related protector blocks, connectors and protector panels, are sold principally to Telcos for use in central office and remote access cabinet surge protection applications in the United States, Canada and Mexico.  Selected products are also purchased by manufacturers as components in higher level integrated copper products.  The assets purchased by Bourns do not include any of Corning Cable Systems’ other copper product solutions or European surge protection solutions.

Bourns has previously acquired the communication protection products businesses of Joslyn Electronics and Emerson Network Power as well as Texas Instruments’ solid state primary protection business and the innovative Transient Blocking Unit business of Fultec Semiconductor.
