Bourns First to Develop Simplified One-Page Documentation Series on Port Interface Circuit Protection

RIVERSIDE, Calif., June 15, 2010 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the introduction of a unique new series of useful design documentation developed to assist designers in selecting the appropriate circuit protection solution for a specific port interface. Bourns® PortNote™ Solutions are a series of one-page documents that provide concise and easily understandable information on relevant compliance standards, Bourns solutions and part numbers, the specific interface schematic and alternative solution references. As the majority of circuit protection products are designed into variations of just a few ports, each Bourns® PortNote™ Solution offers designers a simple starting point for the protection of a particular port.

“Bourns® PortNote™ Solutions are a time-saving design tool that quickly provides an effective circuit protection solution known to work in most typical applications down to the Bourns® part number,” said Dr. Erik Meijer, vice president of circuit protection at Bourns. “PortNote™ Solutions are not intended to replace detailed application notes or the customized solutions provided by our FAE teams, but rather be a useful resource to streamline the circuit protection selection process for a specific port interface.”

Accessible on the Bourns website, Bourns currently has 13 PortNote™ Solutions in its documentation library with more in development and planned for release in the near future. At present, there are four PortNote™ Solutions that cover Ethernet and USB ports for datacom applications; three on HDMI and VHF/UHF coaxial ports for audio/video applications and six show solutions for ISDN, various RJ11 and VDSL ports in telecom designs.  In addition, Bourns offers corresponding Design Kits. Each design kit contains enough Bourns® products to build five of the circuits suggested in the PortNote™ Solution. Bourns Introduces New High Current Power Inductors with Advanced Flat Wire Technology for Use in DC/DC Converters

RIVERSIDE, Calif., April 20, 2010 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today introduced two new power inductors that feature advanced flat wire technology for lower DC resistance and higher current ratings in an ultra small package. Bourns’ innovative power inductor design utilizes a flat wire within a molded magnetically shielded housing that enables lower DC resistance and slightly higher current ratings compared to traditionally used round wire. Designated Bourns® Models SRP4020 and SRP7030F, the new inductors are ideally suited for use in DC/DC converters for mobile electronic devices and computers, as well as data storage and voltage regulator modules. Other applications that can benefit from Bourns’ advanced power inductor design include servers, portable gaming devices, navigation systems, automotive electronics, medical equipment and more.

Bourns® Model SRP4020 features a very compact footprint of 4.8 x 4 mm in and 2 mm height. The device has an inductance range of 0.22 – 2.2 µH, with a heat rating current up to 10 A and a saturation current up to 15 A. Bourns® Model SRP7030F also offers a compact footprint of 7.6 x 6.5 mm in a 3.2 mm height. The inductance range is 0.1 – 10 µH, with a heat rating current up to 32 A and a saturation current up to 60 A.

“Flat wire technology offers a new breakthrough design with lower DC resistance and a compact size, which is very attractive for design engineers of mobile devices or other applications where prolonged battery life is essential,” said Guido Zehnder, product line manager for Bourns’ power inductor products. “We believe the trend for lower DC resistance and smaller sizes in power inductors will continue as applications, and especially mobile devices, will increasingly require more compact, low-power components.”

Bourns Introduces New WEBENCH-Based Tools for Power Supply, LED Driver Design and Inductor Selection

RIVERSIDE, Calif., November 17, 2009 — Bourns, Inc, a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced that the company has introduced the availability of WEBENCH® Designer customized specifically for Bourns and its inductor customers. In cooperation with National Semiconductor Corp., the Bourns® version of WEBENCH Designer is available now on the Bourns website, www.bourns.com. It is a powerful design and prototyping tool designed to help create power supplies, DC-DC converters and LED driver solutions that meet design requirements for simulation, optimization and quick prototypes. WEBENCH tools enable designers to easily fine-tune switching power supply and LED driver designs and solve problems before a prototype is built, alleviating the time and extra costs associated with traditional design methods. The new toolset can also be used for device selection allowing customers to locate the optimal switching regulator and Inductor products for their power supply and LED applications.

“One of the great challenges of power supply design is finding the time to perform labor-intensive tasks to define the circuits and calculate component values,” said Andy Chow, Field Application Engineer for Bourns, Inc. “Bourns now offers an easy-to-use, advanced toolset to automatically create the best possible power supply to meet both designer and customer requirements in just a few keystrokes and every solution is optimized around the ideal Bourns Inductor.”

To use the new Bourns version of WEBENCH Designer, simply log onto the Bourns website and click on the “LED and Power Design Tool” caption on the home page. Visitors are then asked to enter their input voltage, the desired output voltage and current for their power supply. WEBENCH Designer displays several circuit solutions for power IC and Bourns Inductor options, including recommendations for the surrounding components.

The optimization tool allows designers to fine-tune their design by making tradeoffs between efficiency and footprint. After the schematic is finalized, the bill of materials (BOM) presents the ideal Bourns Inductor and all of the other power components in the system. Adding to the inductor selection flexibility, “Select Alternate Part” allow designers to choose another Bourns Inductor for a different footprint or performance. A final printout featuring a full report including schematic, BOM, operating values, and performance charts is also available. Over 1900 Bourns Inductors are included in the tool, providing solutions to a large variety of applications. The parametric values cover a wide range including: Inductance from .1 uH to 15000 uH, DCR’s from 2 mOhms to 168 Ohms and Current rating from 20mA up to 46A.

Bourns Announces New SRF Series of Line Filters for EMI Suppression

RIVERSIDE, Calif., July 15, 2009 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the new SRF series of line filters for electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression.  Designated Bourns® models SRF0504, SRF0602, SRF0905, SRF1006 and SRF1306, the new lead free line filters feature inductance values from 0.55 µH up to 6500 µH and current ratings as high as 5 amps.  Line filters are required in personal computers, data terminals, test equipment and process controllers for high frequency suppression into or out of electronic equipment.  The new devices are RoHS* compliant and offer excellent EMI suppression capability at high frequencies for a broad range of applications that require minimization of interference.

Riverside, California – May 21, 2009 – Bourns® Inductive Components Product Line adds a new series of line filters. The SRF series includes five models with inductance values from 0.55 μH up to 6500 μH. Current ratings as high as 5 amps are available.  Line filters provide EMI suppression for applications that require minimization of interference.

The five new models are: SRF0504, SRF0602, SRF0905, SRF1006, and SRF1306. Data sheets have been added to the Bourns website at www.bourns.com.
