RIVERSIDE, Calif., January 26, 2016 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced three new uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) that are compact, feature-rich DC power supply and battery back-up solutions. The latest UPS devices from Bourns are optimal DC power supply and battery back-up devices for 12 Vdc powered Optical Network Terminals (ONTs), and are also well-suited for any 12 Vdc application where DC power and battery back-up is required. Offering small size for placement flexibility and designed for high reliability, Bourns’ latest UPS models provide three alarm features, ONT reset and cold start functions along with overvoltage protection and EMI/RFI filtering. These UPS devices utilize Lithium-Ion battery technology with integrated battery management systems which helps assure long-life and safe operation.

The Model MX1236 Series Indoor MicroFlex UPS offers a unique low-profile design where the DC supply and Lithium-Ion battery pack can be stacked, and can accept up to three battery packs for additional back-up capacity. In addition, the Model MX1236 Series UPS is capable of accepting 50 / 60 Hz AC power inputs from 100 to 240 Vac. This DC power supply provides a nominal DC output of 12 V / 3.0 A (36 Watts). During a power failure, the replaceable Lithium-Ion battery pack is capable of providing up to 10 hours of back-up capacity at 8 Watts. UL Listed, the Bourns® Model MX1236 Series provides the small size and flexibility needed to support today’s ONTs, Optical Network Units (ONUs), Fiber to the Home (FTTH), security systems, and more. Orderable options are: Model MX1236-L2-C7 which includes a power supply, UPS battery and relays for Vdc and telemetry output and Model MX1236-P-C7 which includes a power supply and relays for Vdc and telemetry output. Model MX36-LC is a replacement battery.

The Bourns® Model MP1218-L1 Series Indoor Micro UPS provides a constant supply of DC power and additionally provides battery back-up power in case of an electrical power outage. It can accept 50 / 60 Hz AC power inputs from 100 to 240 Vac. The DC power supply provides a nominal DC output of 12 V / 1.5 A (18 Watts). During a power failure, the replaceable battery pack is capable of providing up to 6 hours of back-up at 8 Watts load. Output cabling options include a 7-conductor 12 Vdc power and telemetry as well as a 2-conductor barrel type connector for DC power only. The UL Listed Model MP1218-L1 Series delivers the small size and flexibility required for current GPON installations. Model MP18-L1 replacement batteries are also available.

A related new product is the Model MP1218-P Series Indoor Micro Power Supply. It is designed and intended for 12 Vdc Optical Network Terminals but can be used in any 12 Vdc application where a DC power supply is required such as VoIP, FTTH and video. A model with seven-conductor Vdc and telemetry is available. The MP1218-P is UL Listed.

As a pricing reference, the Bourns® Model MX1236 is list priced at $184, Model MP1218-L1 is list priced at $140 and Model MP1218-P is list priced at $70 each in single piece quantities. The new models are available now and are RoHS compliant*.

Erik Meijer Promoted to President, Bourns Electronics

RIVERSIDE, Calif., May 1, 2012 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced that Erik Meijer has been promoted to the newly created position of President, Bourns Electronics.  In his new role, Meijer will be responsible for overseeing the company’s various business segments.  Meijer will report to Bourns, Inc. President and Chief Operating Officer, John Halenda, who has announced that he will retire in March 2013.

“Erik has demonstrated exceptional leadership capabilities during his more than eleven years with Bourns. For example, under his guidance, the Circuit Protection Division has achieved 500 percent growth over the past 10 years,” said Gordon Bourns, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bourns. “Bourns is on track for continued growth and innovation, and I am confident that Erik will bring his winning executive management skills to his expanded role as President, Bourns Electronics. Hired in 2000, Meijer has held progressively more responsible executive positions at Bourns. He previously served as Vice President and General Manager of Bourns’ Circuit Protection Division for the past 10 years, and assumed the added responsibility of Vice President and General Manager of Bourns’ Resistive Products Division last year. Meijer was also the architect and champion of Bourns’ successful transition from a product-focused organization to a market solutions-directed company. A graduate of Lund University in Sweden, Meijer holds a PhD and an MSci degree in Engineering Physics.

Bourns Adds 19 New Documents to its Successful PortNote® Solutions Series

RIVERSIDE, Calif., November 29, 2011 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced that it has added 19 new PortNote® Solutions to assist designers in selecting the appropriate circuit protection solution for a specific port interface. These new documents add to the company’s successful series that provide engineers with a simplified design starting point that includes precise information on relevant compliance standards, the optimal Bourns solution with part numbers, an interface schematic and alternative solution references. These new documents cover port protection for audio/video, battery pack, data communication, LED and telecommunications designs, and are a useful resource to help streamline the circuit protection selection process for a specific port interface. In addition to the documentation, Bourns offers corresponding design kits for each of the new PortNote® Solutions.

Bourns and Magnachip Announce Volume Ramp of TBU® Series of High-Speed Circuit Protection Devices

RIVERSIDE, California and SEOUL, South Korea, September 27, 2011 – MagnaChip Semiconductor Corporation (“MagnaChip”) (NYSE: MX), a Korea-based designer and manufacturer of analog and mixed-signal semiconductor products, and Bourns, Inc. (“Bourns”), a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components announced today that MagnaChip has ramped to mass production all families of the Bourns® series of  high-speed circuit protection devices (TBU® HSP) designed for a broad selection of Industrial, Consumer and Telecommunication applications.

TBU® HSP devices are constructed using MOSFET semiconductor technology.  When placed in series in the system, the TBU® HSP device monitors the current flowing through the line.  If the current exceeds a preset level, the TBU® HSP device triggers in less than 1µs, providing an effective barrier to large, destructive voltages or currents during surge events, thereby protecting sensitive electronics.  These devices are particularly popular in Telecommunication applications (such as Voice SLICs, xPON and GBEthernet), Industrial applications (such as RS485 interfaces, surveillance systems and avionics) and Consumer products applications (such as set top boxes and home gateways).

The TBU® HSP devices are custom designed and developed using Bourns’ proprietary technology fabricated by MagnaChip.  MagnaChip successfully transferred two proprietary processes of Bourns needed to produce the TBU® HSP devices by closely working with Bourns’ engineering team.  Both processes are currently in the production ramp phase.

RIVERSIDE, Calif., August 3, 2011 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the availability of two new evaluation boards for RS-485-based applications. Using Bourns® TBU® High-Speed Protectors (HSPs), GDTs, TVS diodes and MOV products, the new boards were developed as a design resource that streamlines evaluating circuit protection on RS-485 serial device ports. To meet the required industry standards on RS-485 port interfaces, the new boards provide two different evaluation approaches. The Bourns RS-485EVALBOARD1 includes two Bourns® TBU® High-Speed Protectors (HSPs), two Bourns® fast-acting GDTs and two Bourns® TVS diodes. The Bourns RS-485EVALBOARD2 uses Bourns® TBU® High-Speed Protectors (HSPs), MOVs and TVS products.

RIVERSIDE, Calif., April 27, 2011 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the company’s smallest battery strap resettable fuse featuring ultra-low resistance designed to deliver reliable and robust circuit protection.  Designated the Bourns® Multifuse® MF-LL Series, the new battery strap resettable fuse was developed in response to  portable electronics industry demand for a miniature-sized, resettable overcurrent protection with the lowest possible resistance.  The new fuse meets the circuit protection requirements of rechargeable battery packs used in portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, MP3 players and digital cameras.

“Using its lowest resistance PTC formulation to date, Bourns has produced a resettable fuse from a chip of less than 11 mm2.  Resettable fuses of such small size generally have quite high resistance values, but Bourns’ new MF-LL Series overcomes this limitation and offers an initial resistance of just 5 to 15 mOhms,” said Brian Ahearne, Multifuse® product line manager at Bourns, Inc.  “As the electronics industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace, the launch of the new MF-LL Series demonstrates Bourns’ ongoing commitment to next-generation resettable fuse development.”

The Bourns® MF-LL1190 Model is available now.  Future models in the series are in development and are scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2011.  The MF-LL Series is also RoHS* compliant.  As a pricing example, Bourns® MF-LL190 is priced at $0.25 each in 10K piece quantities.

Bourns Announces New Line of Shunt Protectors Designed Specifically for Sensitive LED Lighting Applications

RIVERSIDE, Calif., February 15, 2011 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced a new line of open LED shunt protection devices designed specifically for LED lighting applications. Designated the Bourns® LSP-Series, the new shunt protector family enables LED lighting applications configured in strings to be more robust and reliable. Most LED designs include solid-state lighting luminaries configured in series strings of 20 or more LEDs. In this configuration, an open LED can cause the entire LED string to go dark, resulting in reduced performance and possible maintenance calls and costly warranty returns. Adding a Bourns® LSP-Series shunt protector to an LED design allows the unaffected lights in the string to remain illuminated by shunting current around the inoperable LED. The new LSP-Series of open LED shunt protectors are an optimal solution for a variety of LED lighting applications including light bulbs, lighting fixtures and backlighting systems.

RIVERSIDE, Calif., February 1, 2011 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced its latest series of TBU® (Transient Blocking Unit) circuit protection devices designed for high speed protection of communications ports.  The new devices are the industry’s first electronic current limiters (ECLs) designed to tolerate AC mains power contact without circuit damage.  Designated the Bourns® TBU® DT-Series, the new circuit protection device family provides superior protection against faults caused by short circuits, AC power cross, induction and lightning surges.  The TBU® DT-Series are very fast-reacting protectors that do not alter the signal performance of high speed communication ports unlike high capacitance protectors.  The new Bourns® TBU® devices are an optimal solution for Ethernet ports used in outdoor applications such as security systems, PV panels and service kiosks.

RIVERSIDE, Calif., September 7, 2010 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the company’s next-generation Transient Blocking Unit (TBU™) Series of circuit protection devices designed to protect a broad selection of industrial and telecommunications applications. The new series provides ultra-fast overcurrent protection offered in a wide range of trigger currents and voltages and reduced form factors to save valuable board space. Designated the Bourns® TBU-CA Series, the new devices are electronic current limiters (ECL) that are triggered by excessive voltage or current. Designed as an optimal circuit protection solution for industrial controls, medical electronics, automated test systems, and military and aerospace applications, the Bourns® TBU-CA Series can be used for protection on Ethernet, RS-485, HART and other ports where dangerous surge and power cross events may occur. The circuit protection device series can also be used in telecom applications and provides a barrier to surges while allowing high frequency signals such as VDSL2 to pass through without damage to the circuit.

Protecting sensitive electronics and applications from the potentially damaging effects of surges that can cause current and voltage to rise above normal operating levels, the Bourns® TBU-CA Series eliminates the need for large shunt protection devices by stopping the damaging currents from reaching protected circuits in less than one microsecond. The new circuit protection devices are low capacitance, single bidirectional high speed devices designed to protect against faults caused by short circuits, AC power cross, induction and lightning surges within rated limits. The resettable devices also feature significantly lower let-thru energy and overshoot protection, which reduces stress on the printed circuit board (PCB) for increased reliability and product life.

“Higher data rates combined with more sensitive electronics presents a real challenge for protection engineers,” said Paul Wiener, telecom market director at Bourns. “Bourns’ unique TBU™ protection technology limits the energy allowed into sensitive electronics without loading high data rate lines with capacitance. This allows designers to place high performance protection on even their highest bandwidth applications.”

The Bourns® TBU-CA Series is available in five impulse blocking voltages from 250V to 850V with minimum trip currents of 50 mA to 500 mA featuring resistance values as low as 3 ohms. Product samples, evaluation boards and sample kits are available now through Bourns’ distribution partners. As a pricing example, Bourns® TBU-CA085-500-WH is priced at ($.69 each) in (10K) quantities.

This technology is designed to block a transient through a current disconnecting mechanism. Rather than a complex interstage coordination between two shunting components, the TBU™ device allows customers to protect circuit boards from both overvoltage and overcurrent surges. Bourns Announces Industry’s First ECL Triggered

– Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced its latest series of Transient Blocking Unit (TBU™) circuit protection devices designed to protect telecommunications applications from surges in the industry’s first electronic current limiter triggered by excessive voltage or current. Designated the Bourns® TBU™ PL-Series SLIC, the new circuit protection device family provides extremely fast overcurrent protection combined with SLIC battery voltage tracking triggered protection. Combined with additional overvoltage protectors, this new solution protects against very high surge levels and meets telecom 500A Telcordia GR-1089 intrabuilding and 6kV/150A ITU-T standards. 

Protecting sensitive telecom applications from the potentially damaging effects of surges that can cause current and voltage to rise above normal operating levels, the Bourns® TBU™ PL-Series responds in 100 nanoseconds.  The resettable circuit protection devices also feature significantly lower let-thru energy and overshoot protection, which reduces stress on the SLIC and the printed circuit board (PCB) for increased reliability and product life.  Bourns’ new TBU™ series also cuts the circuit protection component count to three devices compared to the seven needed in a conventional gated thyristor solution because there is no need for peripheral R-C or L-C components nor additional GDTs for increased surge requirements that take up valuable PCB space and increase manufacturing costs.

The Bourns® TBU™ PL-Series is available in three voltages (850, 600 and 500) and two operating current levels (100 mA and 200 mA) that match worldwide standards and SLIC chipset requirements.  Product samples, evaluation boards and sample kits are available now through Bourns’ distribution partners.  As a pricing example, Bourns® TBU-PL050-100-WH is priced at ($.056 each) in (3K) quantities.
