Bourns Introduces New Range of High Power, Ultra-low Ohmic Current Sense Resistor Products

RIVERSIDE, Calif., May 10, 2016 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today introduced a new range of high power, ultra-low ohmic current sense resistor products. Bourns designed its latest current measurement devices to help power electronics developers save energy while maximizing sensing performance in their designs. The Model CSS series features feature low Temperature Coefficient of Resistance (TCR) for operating accuracy over wide temperature ranges and excellent long term stability. Their very low resistance levels, low thermal electromotive force (EMF) and high power handling capabilities make them ideal solutions for a variety of industrial applications and power electronics including battery management systems, switch mode power supplies and motor drives.

“Current sense resistors are growing in popularity due to their high measurement accuracy and relatively low cost compared to other technologies,” said Brian Ahearne, product line manager at Bourns, Inc. “Bourns designed this new family of high power current sense resistors so designers have an accurate device for higher power applications where they must monitor a voltage drop across the sense resistor and convert to a current reading to assist in the efficient operation of the circuit.”

Bourns’ new Model CSS series is available in both 2 and 4-terminal options. The 2-terminal models are offered in three different foot print sizes, 5930, 3920 and 2512. The 4-terminal devices allow for very precise 4 Kelvin (K) resistance measurement. Their metal alloy current sensing element allows for low thermal EMF and low TCRs of 50 PPM/C in the 20C to 60C temperature range. Both series options supply resistance values as low as 0.5 milliohms, and customers can select from a range of low resistance options and power ratings of up to 9W.

Bourns will showcase the new series of current sense at the PCIM Europe 2016 Conference, May 10-12, Nuremberg, Germany, Bourns Booth #430, Hall 7. In addition to current sense resistors, Bourns will showcase its breadth of magnetics products, Multifuse® PPTC resettable fuses and thyristor surge protector products. This broad line-up provides the technologies developers need to meet today’s challenging power electronics requirements while offering a valuable “one-stop-shop” resource for OEMs.

RIVERSIDE, Calif., April 13, 2016 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced its Model CRT-AS Sulfur-Resistant series of thin film precision chip resistors. Designed specifically to operate in harsh environments exposed to high levels of sulfur contamination, the Bourns® Model CRT-AS series have a substantially increased lifespan compared to standard film resistors when exposed to a sulfurous gas environment, thus making them ideal solutions for a broad variety of mission-critical applications including industrial, automation, power supplies and communication base stations.

 

Many applications must operate in high-sulfur environments, such as where oils, lubricants, or fossil fuels are present, and in harsh, corrosive remote conditions and polluted industrial areas exhibiting high-sulfur contamination. The design of and materials used in typical thick film resistors, particularly the silver in the silver palladium internal terminal, make these resistors susceptible to the ingress of sulfur-based gasses. Common factors such as temperature, humidity and air flow, coupled with the presence of sulfur-based gasses, contribute to the corrosion process and the formation of harmful silver sulfide, which ultimately can cause an open circuit condition and failure of the resistor.

“As more and more devices and systems are connected, the reliable transfer of data and the need for uncorrupted data transmission and reception at the binary level is more important than ever. Available in four different footprints from 0402 (1005 Metric) up to 1206 (3015 Metric), the Bourns® Model CRT-AS series is manufactured using a thin film element printed onto a ceramic substrate and tested in accordance with the ASTM B809-95 method. The series is also available in additional wide resistance, temperature coefficiency and tolerance options.

The latest UPS devices from Bourns are optimal DC power supply and battery back-up devices for 12 Vdc powered Optical Network Terminals (ONTs), and are also well-suited for any 12 Vdc application where DC power and battery back-up is required. Offering small size for placement flexibility and designed for high reliability, Bourns’ latest UPS models provide three alarm features, ONT reset and cold start functions along with overvoltage protection and EMI/RFI filtering. These UPS devices utilize Lithium-Ion battery technology with integrated battery management systems which helps assure long-life and safe operation.

The Model MX1236 Series Indoor MicroFlex UPS offers a unique low-profile design where the DC supply and Lithium-Ion battery pack can be stacked, and can accept up to three battery packs for additional back-up capacity. In addition, the Model MX1236 Series UPS is capable of accepting 50 / 60 Hz AC power inputs from 100 to 240 Vac. This DC power supply provides a nominal DC output of 12 V / 3.0 A (36 Watts). During a power failure, the replaceable Lithium-Ion battery pack is capable of providing up to 10 hours of back-up capacity at 8 Watts. UL Listed, the Bourns® Model MX1236 Series provides the small size and flexibility needed to support today’s ONTs, Optical Network Units (ONUs), Fiber to the Home (FTTH), security systems, and more. Orderable options are: Model MX1236-L2-C7 which includes a power supply, UPS battery and relays for Vdc and telemetry output and Model MX1236-P-C7 which includes a power supply and relays for Vdc and telemetry output. Model MX36-LC is a replacement battery.

The Bourns® Model MP1218-L1 Series Indoor Micro UPS provides a constant supply of DC power and additionally provides battery back-up power in case of an electrical power outage. It can accept 50 / 60 Hz AC power inputs from 100 to 240 Vac. The DC power supply provides a nominal DC output of 12 V / 1.5 A (18 Watts). During a power failure, the replaceable battery pack is capable of providing up to 6 hours of back-up at 8 Watts load. Output cabling options include a 7-conductor 12 Vdc power and telemetry as well as a 2-conductor barrel type connector for DC power only. The UL Listed Model MP1218-L1 Series delivers the small size and flexibility required for current GPON installations. Model MP18-L1 replacement batteries are also available.

A related new product is the Model MP1218-P Series Indoor Micro Power Supply. It is designed and intended for 12 Vdc Optical Network Terminals but can be used in any 12 Vdc application where a DC power supply is required such as VoIP, FTTH and video. A model with seven-conductor Vdc and telemetry is available. The MP1218-P is UL Listed.

The transfer of the acquired assets will begin in early 2016. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Today, trimming potentiometers are used to perform a variety of circuit adjustments in all types of electronic equipment in virtually every market around the world. It features a low capacitance variation of 0.02 pF to ensure minimal impact to the signal integrity of the high speed interface the device is protecting.

Bourns Extends Voltage Range of Popular High Power TVS Diode Product Series

RIVERSIDE, Calif., November 19, 2015 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the extension of the voltage range of its popular high power TVS (PTVS) diode PTVS3 product series. The new 15 V bidirectional high current PTVS diodes are designed to meet the protection needs of DC power supplies and power management systems with 12 V batteries. Designated Model PTVS3-015C-TH, the latest high current bidirectional TVS diodes from Bourns offer bidirectional port protection meeting IEC 61000-4-5 8/20 μs current surge requirements. When compared to typical competing MOV technology, the use of Bourns’ innovative silicon technology in the Power TVS products provides a lower clamping voltage under surge, greater performance stability and increased reliability.

 

“Based on customer demands, Bourns added the new lower 15 V PTVS model to our line-up giving exposed and/or harsh environment power supplies the protection they need,” said Ben Huang, Product Line Manager at Bourns, Inc. “What makes these new devices ideal is that they exhibit an excellent surge response versus temperature where the maximum surge current at 150 °C exceeds 70 % of their rated value at 25 °C.”

As a pricing reference, the Bourns® Model PTVS3-015C-TH is priced at $9.90 each in 50 piece quantities. The new model is available now and is RoHS compliant* and halogen free**.
