Bourns Expands Innovative Line of Volume, Space-saving FLAT® GDT Devices

RIVERSIDE, Calif., October 17, 2017 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today expanded its standard-setting line of volume and space saving FLAT® gas discharge tube (GDT) surge arrestors. The Model 2018 Series FLAT® GDT is a 3-electrode device that delivers a low profile solution for high density and height-restricted PCB-based applications. The new series is lighter weight with a 50 % height reduction compared to standard 8 mm Bourns® GDTs. Bourns designed this latest series as a surface mount device with a large top flat surface, making it ideal for vacuum head pickup in today’s high-speed pick and place manufacturing.

The Bourns® FLAT® GDT Model 2018 is an ITU K.12 Class III device rated at 20 kA¹ on an 8/20 µs waveform. The series is offered with DC breakdown voltages ranging from 90 to 500 V and features an innovative flat design that reduces the height of the Bourns® GDT from a typical 8 mm to a low profile of 3.5 mm.

“Besides saving valuable PCB space, these new 3-electrode FLAT® GDT devices help to reduce component count in space-constrained designs. The series provides the ability to protect both Line to Ground and Line to Line with a single Model 2018 FLAT® GDT, which previously required two GDTs,” said Kurt Wattelet, product line manager at Bourns, Inc. “As a 3-electrode GDT, transverse voltage limiting performance is enhanced with the ability to share a common center electrode designed to allow both sides of the GDT to turn on quickly resulting in balanced operation.”

RIVERSIDE, Calif., January 26, 2016 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced three new uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) that are compact, feature-rich DC power supply and battery back-up solutions. The latest UPS devices from Bourns are optimal DC power supply and battery back-up devices for 12 Vdc powered Optical Network Terminals (ONTs), and are also well-suited for any 12 Vdc application where DC power and battery back-up is required. Offering small size for placement flexibility and designed for high reliability, Bourns’ latest UPS models provide three alarm features, ONT reset and cold start functions along with overvoltage protection and EMI/RFI filtering. These UPS devices utilize Lithium-Ion battery technology with integrated battery management systems which helps assure long-life and safe operation.

The Model MX1236 Series Indoor MicroFlex UPS offers a unique low-profile design where the DC supply and Lithium-Ion battery pack can be stacked, and can accept up to three battery packs for additional back-up capacity. In addition, the Model MX1236 Series UPS is capable of accepting 50 / 60 Hz AC power inputs from 100 to 240 Vac. This DC power supply provides a nominal DC output of 12 V / 3.0 A (36 Watts). During a power failure, the replaceable Lithium-Ion battery pack is capable of providing up to 10 hours of back-up capacity at 8 Watts. UL Listed, the Bourns® Model MX1236 Series provides the small size and flexibility needed to support today’s ONTs, Optical Network Units (ONUs), Fiber to the Home (FTTH), security systems, and more. Orderable options are: Model MX1236-L2-C7 which includes a power supply, UPS battery and relays for Vdc and telemetry output and Model MX1236-P-C7 which includes a power supply and relays for Vdc and telemetry output. Model MX36-LC is a replacement battery.

The Bourns® Model MP1218-L1 Series Indoor Micro UPS provides a constant supply of DC power and additionally provides battery back-up power in case of an electrical power outage. It can accept 50 / 60 Hz AC power inputs from 100 to 240 Vac. The DC power supply provides a nominal DC output of 12 V / 1.5 A (18 Watts). During a power failure, the replaceable battery pack is capable of providing up to 6 hours of back-up at 8 Watts load. Output cabling options include a 7-conductor 12 Vdc power and telemetry as well as a 2-conductor barrel type connector for DC power only. The UL Listed Model MP1218-L1 Series delivers the small size and flexibility required for current GPON installations. Model MP18-L1 replacement batteries are also available.

A related new product is the Model MP1218-P Series Indoor Micro Power Supply. It is designed and intended for 12 Vdc Optical Network Terminals but can be used in any 12 Vdc application where a DC power supply is required such as VoIP, FTTH and video. A model with seven-conductor Vdc and telemetry is available. The MP1218-P is UL Listed.

Bourns Expands Surge Protection Portfolio with TISP Protector for VDSL and G.fast Applications

RIVERSIDE, Calif., December 15, 2015 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced it has expanded its line of TISP surge protector devices with a new device designed for ADSL, VDSL and G.fast applications. Designated Model TISP4G024L1W, Bourns latest surge protector is designed to be placed between the xDSL line driver device and the transformer, protecting the line driver from overvoltage conditions. It features a low capacitance variation of 0.02 pF to ensure minimal impact to the signal integrity of the high speed interface the device is protecting.

 

The Model TISP4G024L1W has a surge capability of 30 A (8/20 μs) that helps developers comply with various international standards such as ITU-T K.20, K.21 or K.45, Telcordia GR-1089-CORE and YD/T for xDSL interfaces.

Bourns’ Model CGA-MLA Series are very fast bidirectional devices that deliver robust overvoltage protection and stable low leakage performance over a wide temperature range. Bourns Announces New High Power TVS Diodes in SMD Package for Exposed AC/DC Power Supply Applications

RIVERSIDE, Calif., August 20, 2014 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced two new high Power TVS diodes that offer enhanced protection in surface mount SMD packaging. The new diodes are designed for DC clamping in exposed AC/DC power supply applications such as wireless base stations. Designated Models PTVS3-058C-SH and PTVS3-076C-SH, the latest high current bidirectional TVS diodes from Bourns offer bidirectional port protection meeting IEC 61000-4-5 8/20 μs current surge requirements.

“Silicon technology in Bourns® Power TVS devices delivers multiple advantages including lower clamping voltage under surge, greater performance stability and increased reliability compared to competing MOV technology that is typically used for DC clamping applications,” said Ben Huang, Product Line Manager at Bourns, Inc. “DC power supplies used in telecom and other exposed applications need protection against hostile events, such as power line surges and indirect lightning strikes to the power supply, by limiting the peak surge voltage to an acceptable level and by not short-circuiting the line for an extended period of time. Bourns® Power TVS diodes are excellent solutions to satisfy these requirements that can help minimize critical system downtime and avoid costly maintenance calls.”

Bourns selected the SMD package for its latest Power TVS products because this type of packaging can simplify assembly and reduce manufacturing costs by eliminating the extra assembly step in situations where the Power TVS diode is the only through-hole component on the printed circuit board. These devices offer excellent surge response versus temperature, where the typical maximum surge current at 150 °C exceeds 70 % of their rated value at 25 °C. The new models also feature standoff voltage of 58 V and 76 V with a peak pulse current rating of 3 kA.

As a pricing reference, the Bourns® Models PTVS3-058C-SH and PTVS3-076C-SH are priced at $23.51 each in 20 piece quantities and $21.70 each in 500 piece quantities. Both new Power TVS diode models are available now and are RoHS compliant*.

Bourns Completes Integration of Jensen Devices AB Acquisition

RIVERSIDE, Calif., December 4, 2012 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced it has completed the integration of its acquisition of assets from Jensen Devices AB. This integration included incorporating the acquired Jensen Devices AB products into Bourns’ gas discharge tube (GDT) product line, which are available for purchase now, and the transfer of manufacturing from Jensen’s factory in Solluntuna, Sweden to Bourns’ ISO certified manufacturing facility in Heredia, Costa Rica. The SA2 series of high voltage GDTs are used as overvoltage protectors and the Sparctube® ST series of switching GDTs are utilized in ignition circuits for automotive HID headlights. These GDT products further enhance Bourns’ superior technical capabilities, and strengthen the company’s circuit protection leadership in several industries including automotive, industrial and telecommunications.

“The successful integration of Jensen Devices products allows Bourns to make a strategic entry into the automotive Xenon headlamp market, which is projected for continued growth through 2016 and beyond,” said Dr. Erik Meijer, President of Bourns Electronics. “These products not only strengthen and expand Bourns’ GDT line, but benefit our customers by giving them additional product options and design flexibility.”

Bourns® Sparctube® ST series of GDTs feature breakdown voltages between 350 V and 1000 V, including the most utilized versions of 800 V and 840 V, which are ideally suited for automotive HID Xenon headlight applications. Characterized by long-term reliability and high temperature performance, the Sparctube® ST series is designed specifically for voltage controlled switching of capacitive discharge circuits where high energy, low loss and a fast rate of switching are required.

The Bourns® SA2 series of high voltage GDTs are designed for high isolation applications such as in street lighting, medical devices, air conditioning units, power supply devices, projectors and welders. RIVERSIDE, Calif., September 12, 2012 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today introduced a breakthrough line of transient current suppressor (TCS™) devices that provide ultra-fast and highly reliable circuit protection to very high data rate signal lines such as those used in xDSL and Gigabit Ethernet (GbE).  Bourns used its extensive circuit protection expertise to innovatively design solutions that combine advanced surge protection with excellent system performance and cost-effectiveness. Designated the Bourns® TCS™ DL-Series, these ultra-fast reacting devices negligibly affect the signal performance of high-speed communication ports unlike typical high capacitance protectors.

Bourns® TCS™ devices are high-speed, bidirectional, low resistance, automatically resettable, compact current limiting devices that protect circuits from overcurrent surges.  Protecting within nanoseconds, the devices are capable of significantly reducing latency common in most circuit protection designs, and limit the let-through energy that could potentially damage sensitive electronic circuits.  A solution consisting of a TCS™ device and an overvoltage protector such as a clamping diode offers OEMs a superior overvoltage and overcurrent protection solution.

Bourns Adds 19 New Documents to its Successful PortNote® Solutions Series

These new documents add to the company’s successful series that provide engineers with a simplified design starting point that includes precise information on relevant compliance standards, the optimal Bourns solution with part numbers, an interface schematic and alternative solution references. These new documents cover port protection for audio/video, battery pack, data communication, LED and telecommunications designs, and are a useful resource to help streamline the circuit protection selection process for a specific port interface. In addition to the documentation, Bourns offers corresponding design kits for each of the new PortNote® Solutions.

Bourns and Magnachip Announce Volume Ramp of TBU® Series of High-Speed Circuit Protection Devices

RIVERSIDE, California and SEOUL, South Korea, September 27, 2011 – MagnaChip Semiconductor Corporation (“MagnaChip”) (NYSE: MX), a Korea-based designer and manufacturer of analog and mixed-signal semiconductor products, and Bourns, Inc. (“Bourns”), a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components announced today that MagnaChip has ramped to mass production all families of the Bourns® series of  high-speed circuit protection devices (TBU® HSP) designed for a broad selection of Industrial, Consumer and Telecommunication applications.

TBU® HSP devices are constructed using MOSFET semiconductor technology.  When placed in series in the system, the TBU® HSP device monitors the current flowing through the line.  If the current exceeds a preset level, the TBU® HSP device triggers in less than 1µs, providing an effective barrier to large, destructive voltages or currents during surge events, thereby protecting sensitive electronics.  These devices are particularly popular in Telecommunication applications (such as Voice SLICs, xPON and GBEthernet), Industrial applications (such as RS485 interfaces, surveillance systems and avionics) and Consumer products applications (such as set top boxes and home gateways).

The TBU® HSP devices are custom designed and developed using Bourns’ proprietary technology fabricated by MagnaChip.  MagnaChip successfully transferred two proprietary processes of Bourns needed to produce the TBU® HSP devices by closely working with Bourns’ engineering team.  Both processes are currently in the production ramp phase.

Bourns Announces Availability of Two New Evaluation Boards for RS-485-based Applications

RIVERSIDE, Calif., August 3, 2011 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the availability of two new evaluation boards for RS-485-based applications. Using Bourns® TBU® High-Speed Protectors (HSPs), GDTs, TVS diodes and MOV products, the new boards were developed as a design resource that streamlines evaluating circuit protection on RS-485 serial device ports. To meet the required industry standards on RS-485 port interfaces, the new boards provide two different evaluation approaches. The Bourns RS-485EVALBOARD1 includes two Bourns® TBU® High-Speed Protectors (HSPs), two Bourns® fast-acting GDTs and two Bourns® TVS diodes. The Bourns RS-485EVALBOARD2 uses Bourns® TBU® High-Speed Protectors (HSPs), MOVs and TVS products.

“Bourns designed the evaluation boards to help developers more quickly and easily determine the circuit protection required for their applications that use RS-485 serial device ports,” said Ian Doyle, product line manager of semiconductor products at Bourns, Inc. “The evaluation boards demonstrate that with Bourns® TBU® HSP solutions, we are able to offer enhanced performance features over competing technologies in terms of increased surge and transient protection levels on RS-485 ports that also enable an entire circuit protection solution to fit into a smaller PCB area.”

Bourns’ RS-485 evaluation boards are offered through the company’s distribution sales partners, with inventory available immediately at Digi-Key, Farnell and Mouser. As a pricing example, the Bourns RS-485EVALBOARD2 is priced at $20.00 in 10 piece quantities.
