Bourns Integrates Two Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficient Resettable Fuses into a Single Package

RIVERSIDE, Calif., March 30, 2010 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced that the company has integrated two polymer positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) resettable fuses into a single package. This new Multifuse® device contains twin 250V polymer PTC resettable fuses and decreases the circuit protection footprint by fifty percent on the circuit board. Designated the Bourns® Model MF-SD013/250-2, the device provides both tip and ring overcurrent protection and aids compliance with ITU-T K.20, K21 and K.45 industry standards as well as Telcordia GR-1089 intra building. Bourns® Multifuse® devices are an optimal solution for telecommunication applications including customer premise equipment and line cards.

Bourns Announces New Transient Voltage Suppressor Diodes for Surge and ESD Protection Applications

RIVERSIDE, Calif., March 24, 2010 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the introduction of four new ESD/EFT/Surge Protection series products designed to meet the space-constrained needs of portable communications, computing and video applications. The new transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diodes offer optimal protection for surge and ESD threats and are available in industry standard SMT package size formats. The new RoHS compliant* diodes comply with IEC 61000-4-2 ESD (Min. Level 4), IEC 61000-4-4 EFT, and IEC 61000-4-5 Surge industry standards. Bourns® chip diodes provide ease of manufacturability with standard pick and place equipment and the flat configuration minimizes roll away.

“Bourns designed its new series of discrete TVS diode products in response to growing customer demand for smaller components in a broad range of telecom, consumer, industrial, medical, audio and instrumentation applications,” said Ian Doyle, ESD protection product manager for Bourns. “Our new TVS diodes provide a good circuit protection solution for these applications while also meeting the highest industry standards.”

Bourns Adds New Ultra-Low Capacitance Thyristor Surge Protectors to its TISP® Product Line

RIVERSIDE, Calif., March 23, 2010 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced that the company has expanded its TISP® thyristor surge protector product line to include new ultra-low capacitance models that allow higher data rates to deliver improved VDSL2 performance while providing protection.  The new Bourns® Models TISP4P015L1N, TISP4P020L1N, TISP4P025L1N and TISP4P035L1N address a range of popular chipset voltages.  These new thyristor surge protectors are designed with a new lower capacitance process as an optimal circuit protection solution for ADSL, ADSL2, ADSL2+, VDSL and VDSL2 applications from overvoltages caused by lightning and AC line disturbances.  Low capacitance reduces distortion and minimizes the effect of using circuit protection in sensitive equipment.  The new devices can also be used for T1/E1 driver protection, in customer premise and central office locations and in any transformer-coupled interface, which leaves the building.

Bourns new TISP® devices are symmetrical, two-terminal thyristor-crowbar devices that can be deployed to protect from line to ground or between the differential driver conductor pair.  When placed between the xDSL line driver IC and the transformer, the devices will clamp and switch into an ultra-low impedance state, safely diverting the energy and protecting sensitive equipment from dangerous overvoltage or line disturbance threats that can result in system failure.

Bourns Announces Circuit Protection Solution for Generator Low-Voltage Control Interfaces

RIVERSIDE, Calif., March 3, 2010 — Bourns, Inc. today announced the company has a circuit protection solution for low-voltage control lines on generator interfaces.  This advanced solution is presented in a new application note from Bourns that details how the company’s circuit protection devices provide a fast response time to protect exposed low-voltage generator terminals of the generator.  This universal circuit protection solution is also important in delivering adequate circuit protection, regardless of installer experience, to guard against miswiring issues that can result in costly, dead on arrival (DOA) equipment failure.  The new application note includes installation information for both line voltage (120 VAC split phase, 240 V) and low voltage signals (less than 50 V) that require a resettable overcurrent/overvoltage solution capable of handling line voltage and ESD/EFT/current surge protection to safeguard sensitive circuits.

The application note shows how a Bourns® TBU™ device combined with a multilayer oxide varistor (MOV) and zener diode provides power cross and overcurrent protection.  It also describes the use of a zener diode for low voltage clamping to protect sensitive circuits and to create an avalanche current, which triggers the TBU device.  Furthermore, the MOV protects the TBU device from excessive common mode voltages when exposed to ESD and EFT surge threats.

Bourns® TBU devices protect low-voltage generators from the following threats:

  • Power cross events that typically occur during installation from miswiring
  • Pre and post-installation ESD threats from handling EFT and  inductive load (relay) switching
  • Post-installation current surges from load switching transients
