Bourns Introduces New WEBENCH-Based Tools for Power Supply, LED Driver Design and Inductor Selection

RIVERSIDE, Calif., November 17, 2009 — Bourns, Inc, a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced that the company has introduced the availability of WEBENCH® Designer customized specifically for Bourns and its inductor customers. In cooperation with National Semiconductor Corp., the Bourns® version of WEBENCH Designer is available now on the Bourns website, www.bourns.com. It is a powerful design and prototyping tool designed to help create power supplies, DC-DC converters and LED driver solutions that meet design requirements for simulation, optimization and quick prototypes. WEBENCH tools enable designers to easily fine-tune switching power supply and LED driver designs and solve problems before a prototype is built, alleviating the time and extra costs associated with traditional design methods. The new toolset can also be used for device selection allowing customers to locate the optimal switching regulator and Inductor products for their power supply and LED applications.

“One of the great challenges of power supply design is finding the time to perform labor-intensive tasks to define the circuits and calculate component values,” said Andy Chow, Field Application Engineer for Bourns, Inc. “Bourns now offers an easy-to-use, advanced toolset to automatically create the best possible power supply to meet both designer and customer requirements in just a few keystrokes and every solution is optimized around the ideal Bourns Inductor.”

To use the new Bourns version of WEBENCH Designer, simply log onto the Bourns website and click on the “LED and Power Design Tool” caption on the home page. Visitors are then asked to enter their input voltage, the desired output voltage and current for their power supply. WEBENCH Designer displays several circuit solutions for power IC and Bourns Inductor options, including recommendations for the surrounding components.

The optimization tool allows designers to fine-tune their design by making tradeoffs between efficiency and footprint. After the schematic is finalized, the bill of materials (BOM) presents the ideal Bourns Inductor and all of the other power components in the system. Adding to the inductor selection flexibility, “Select Alternate Part” allow designers to choose another Bourns Inductor for a different footprint or performance. A final printout featuring a full report including schematic, BOM, operating values, and performance charts is also available. Over 1900 Bourns Inductors are included in the tool, providing solutions to a large variety of applications. The parametric values cover a wide range including: Inductance from .1 uH to 15000 uH, DCR’s from 2 mOhms to 168 Ohms and Current rating from 20mA up to 46A.

RIVERSIDE, Calif., October 20, 2009 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced that the company has  expanded its line of fixed resistor products to include a new radio frequency (RF) Power Termination that is the industry’s first Stripline 50 ohm Termination to feature 1000 Watts (W) at frequencies up to 1 gigahertz (GHz).  Designated Model CHF190104KxBF500L, the new RF Power Termination is able to run at very high power due to excellent thermal impedance.  In addition, at 800 megahertz (MHz), designers can expect few reflections as the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is a maximum of 1.06.  Optimized for applications where a high power termination is required to be remotely located, the new Bourns® RF Power Termination is designed for combiners and dividers in television and radio broadcast, radar and medical equipment or other applications that require very high power.

Bourns’® Model CHF190104KxBF500L can also help decrease the number of interconnections needed in a system.  Due to its improved power range, engineers can achieve higher power in their combiners or reduce the existing number of terminations to achieve the same amount of power, which helps to decrease overall product footprint and costs.  The new device also features a 1000 W at 100 degrees Celsius case temperature.

Riverside, Calif., September 1, 2009 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the introduction of the company’s latest generation of semi-absolute and absolute, non-contacting steering angle sensing technology.  The new technology supports low cost solutions that require accurate steering feedback for interfacing with automotive applications such as electronic stability control (ESC), active suspension, and electro power steering (EPS). The customized steering angle sensors can also be used with electronic self parking (E-Park), lane departure warning (LDW), and advanced front lighting systems (AFLS) applications and are based on anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) technology. The electronics used in Bourns’ customized steering angle sensors can be packaged to facilitate reduced sensor dimensions as small as  60 mm x 78 mm x 14 mm and printed circuit board (PCB) dimensions as small as 50 mm x 20 mm.

“Bourns is pleased to offer its automotive customers customized steering angle sensors to fit their specific needs,” said Johneric Leach, product line manager for steering and vehicle stability sensors at Bourns. “The new sensors are based on AMR technology for a more robust design, which allows the devices to be less sensitive to temperature fluctuations, shock and vibrations. Thanks to AMR technology, the sensors can also withstand large variations in the gap between the sensor and magnet.”

The new steering angle sensors feature a Bourns-patented device that minimizes the hysteresis associated with the steering column’s mechanical tolerances and is available in either single or dual redundant designs. The customized sensors are typically equipped with a CAN interface to allow resolutions close to 16 bit and accuracies down to below 0.5 degrees. The sensors also feature a complete self-diagnostic capability and a customized design is available that supports full active steering.

RIVERSIDE, Calif., August 11, 2009 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced additions to the Bourns Model 3382 rotary position sensor.  Initially released in September 2008, the popular model is compact and highly reliable with up to 1,000,000 rotational cycles.  The new additions include a through-hole option (H pin style), an increased standard rotor slot offering to accommodate 4 mm (-1) and 3.5 mm (-2) diameter D-shafts and resistance values ranging from 2.5K to 100K ohms.  The additional resistance values allow for broader freedom and flexibility for component circuit designs without limiting them to 10K ohms.  The  Bourns Model 3382 is designed for a wide range of applications requiring high quality and reliability such as navigation systems, automotive power seats and mirrors, portable electronic equipment, digital cameras, industrial equipment and controls, robotic systems and home applications including mechanical compartment systems, appliances and in-wall temperature control systems.

“The additional resistance values are significant because the only value currently available in the marketplace is 10K ohms.  Instead of just one available resistance value, engineers now have six different values ranging from 2.5K ohms to 100K ohms,” said Emill Melliz, Trimpot® product line manager at Bourns.  “The new additions to the Bourns Model 3382 rotary position sensor provide greater design options and allow engineers to find the best fit for their particular application.”

RIVERSIDE, Calif., July 15, 2009 — Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the new SRF series of line filters for electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression.  Designated Bourns® models SRF0504, SRF0602, SRF0905, SRF1006 and SRF1306, the new lead free line filters feature inductance values from 0.55 µH up to 6500 µH and current ratings as high as 5 amps.  Line filters are required in personal computers, data terminals, test equipment and process controllers for high frequency suppression into or out of electronic equipment.  The new devices are RoHS* compliant and offer excellent EMI suppression capability at high frequencies for a broad range of applications that require minimization of interference.

Bourns Announces New Steering Diode Array Device Optimized for ESD, EFT and Surge Protection

RIVERSIDE, Calif., July 8, 2009 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the introduction of a new steering diode array that provides up to six lines of protection using the “rail to rail” clamping technique with low leakage current and low capacitance per line. Designated Bourns® model CDNBS08-SR112, the lead-free steering diode device was designed specifically for ESD, EFT and surge protection applications and is RoHS compliant.* Available in an NSOIC-8 package, the new device is designed to be mounted directly onto an FR4 printed circuit board. Bourns’ steering diode array meets IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD), IEC 61000-4-4 (EFT) and IEC 61000-4-5 (surge) requirements for external ports and features very low capacitance of 5 pF to minimize electrical distortion. The devices also meet many worldwide, industry and government regulations regarding lead-free components and are designed for a variety of manufacturing environments, allowing the use of industry-standard “pick and place” equipment. The chip diode NSOIC-8 package offers simplified production with its flat configuration that minimizes rollaway.

RIVERSIDE, Calif., July 8, 2009 – Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced the introduction of a new steering diode array that provides up to six lines of protection using the “rail to rail” clamping technique with low leakage current and low capacitance per line. Designated Bourns® model CDNBS08-SR112, the lead-free steering diode device was designed specifically for ESD, EFT and surge protection applications and is RoHS compliant.* Available in an NSOIC-8 package, the new device is designed to be mounted directly onto an FR4 printed circuit board.
